SHARJAH ? The Sharjah Police have reported a drastic decrease in the number of beggars nabbed this Ramadan compared to the last few years. Colonel Mohamed Rashid Bayat, Director of the Inspection and Criminal Investigation Department, said the amount of money seized from the procession of the beggars is also smaller compared to the amount seized from beggars last year.

“This year, we did not arrest any group of beggars working for organisations outside the country and sending them money. We had arrested a number of beggars recruited and brought to the UAE on visit visas and were offered accommodation by such organizations in the past. The majority of those arrested recently were Asians who have been illegally staying in the country. Some of them were women.”

Asked about the techniques used by the beggars arrested this month, he said they were using the methods well known to people.

“We have found a number of beggars who were claiming they were working for certain organisations and that with the donated money, mosques, hospitals or schools will be built. They would also show bogus papers with the names and logos of the organisations.

“Some beggars were also using young boys and girls to win the sympathy of people. People should never believe their claims and benevolent people wishing to donate money should directly pay it to well-known charity organisations.”

Colonel Bayat praised the positive role played by members of the cosiety as the police received several calls reporting the location of beggars in residential areas, nearby mosques and parking areas.

“This year, we succeeded in arresting a gang that was planning to sell a huge quantity of firecrackers and one of the arrested suspects was hiding the crackers in his bedroom. If these crackers had exploded, it could have led to fatalities among the building’s tenants but we arrested the suspects and seized all crackers.”

He said the campaign aiming at curbing illegal activities will continue. “We are sure some people will try to exploit Eid and other such occasions to illegal practices like begging and we warn them that they will be arrested sooner or later as they are totally unacceptable.”
