DUBAI ? A driver was sentenced to six-month imprisonment last week for stealing Dh950,000 belonging to his workplace. The Court of First Instance also ordered that the 46-year-old Sri Lankan driver be deported after serving his jail term.
The defendant was accused of stealing the money which was kept in a suitcase in the car of the company he worked for.A 23-year-old British partner in that company told the prosecutor that he was with the defendant and another man on the day of incident in May. The defendant was driving the company’s car.The partner and the other man went to a bank in Al Rigga and told the defendant that they would come back few minutes later. When they came back, they found the car left unlocked with the key inside. The defendant was nowhere there. His mobile phone was switched off.Only when they went to a nearby shopping centre, they realised that Dh950,000 was missing from the suitcase. Their attempt to trace the driver through a common acquaintance failed.
