SHARJAH - The Sharjah Police have arrested seven Asians who were allegedly involved in selling phone credits after they assaulted a man who sold phone credits to passers-by in their area. The police, following up a complaint filed by the victim on Thursday, conducted inspections in the area where the assault allegedly happened and arrested the seven suspects.
They were found to be staying in the country illegally and a few of them were wanted by the police in theft cases. The illegal activity of selling phone credits was highlighted by Khaleej Times in a special report published on January 10, 2010, and the police had promised to investigate the practice. Since then, however, the activities of phone credit sellers have expanded and entrenched with some of them resorting to violence to protect their turf and discourage encroaching on their area of operation. A senior Sharjah Police officer said they would intensify inspections in residential, industrial and commercial areas and arrest who ever found selling mobile phone credits to passers-by.The police also warned that those who found buying phone credits from such vendors would be questioned. The police urged the public to cooperate with the police and inform them about anyone found standing in the corners of the street asking passers-by to buy phone credit balance.afkarali@khaleejtimes.comView the original article here
